Text Box: GOUGH WALKS SOCIETY

This Society was formed some ten years ago with the purpose of marking and mapping the walks in the countryside around Myddle as mentioned in Richard Gough’s ‘History of Myddle’.

This was successfully achieved together with a celebration of Gough’s life in various forms in both Church and the community.

The proceeds from the published pamphlets and maps passed to the Church of St. Peter some time ago and are still on sale there. The Society also marked Gough’s Church association by the affixing of a brass plate on the pew once occupied by the Gough family.

The Society has fulfilled its aims and ambitions and it is now desired to wind up its activities and lodge its archives in the Church where they can be accessed at any time on application. It has always been felt that the Church which was the centre of Gough’s life is the natural guardian of his legacy and that the surplus funds be donated to the preservation of its fabric.

Many of the members of the Society have now dispersed and as Secretary/Treasurer, together with President Ruth Lund, we invite them to inform us of their agreement to this course of action. If we receive a majority in favour, we will distribute the funds as mentioned above.

Please let us know your views by the 30th August by writing to Bryan North, 2 Bridgewater Close, Harmer Hill, SY4 3HF or telephoning on 290992.

I look forward to hearing from you.
