There was no formal meeting in December as members gathered at The Bothy Restaurant at Hadnall for their Christmas celebration. On arrival we found the room candlelit and beautifully decorated.

During the serving of an excellent three course meal Julia Clarke and Shelley Miller ran a highly entertaining quiz, which frequently had the room in uproar. Guests were seated at three tables and Julia skipped between them, rather in the manner of a dervish, chivvying and keeping everyone on task. The event was great fun, very competitive, and Anne Duff, in particular, proved a star on questions relating to the history of Shropshire. Winners were announced in reverse order and in the uproar I confess I am unsure which two teams won the top prizes.

We apologise to the family who were also in the restaurant that evening. They tolerated us with good humour, if some amazement, and joined in the quiz. A special thank you is owed to Shelley, who had made all the arrangements, to ensure such a successful evening.

The January meeting proved to be another hectic night, when, despite adverse weather conditions, the meeting was well attended. Dot Davies and Joyce Humphreys had organised an indoor curling competition, followed by a fish and chip supper. Whilst teams of 4 competed in the curling other members sat down to play whist. The institute hopes to host a whist drive in the not too distant future. The curling competition again proved noisy and great fun, helping members to shake off the post Christmas cold.
