languages of which Mandarin is the one most used. This is an ancient civilisation which is changing at an amazing pace to become a top ranked industrial country. There had been 17 dynasties but then came the Revolution. Despite this 85% of the population still work on the land but many are arriving in the big cities looking for better paid work. Tourism is now a big part of the economy.

               There were slides of many beautiful historical sites with pagodas and lakes which seemed a world away from the big cities. Whilst building the Great Wall was an enormous undertaking, much to be admired, the lower reaches are now geared up to cater for thousands of tourists. I found the slides of the remote upper reaches much more appealing with wonderful vistas of the hills and valleys. The wall is 1,700 miles long and the authorities are working hard to make much more accessible. All in all, it was an insight into another world for most of us although several members had also visited China.

               The next meeting will be on April 8th. when the speaker will be Mrs. Healey. Her subject will be 'A Family Tree'.
