Harmer Hill and District W.I. March 2010. ***************************************** The March meeting, held in Harmer Hill Village Hall, was well attended. President Margaret Heath was in the chair and welcomed members and one guest. Members were pleased to hear that our Darts A Team have reached the final which will be held at the Greenfields Social Club on April 30th. On March 17th the institute will hold its annual end of season dinner at the Red Castle for darts team and institute members. On April 17th. the institute will have a table at the St. Peter's Church Car Boot and Table Top sale in Harmer Hill Village Hall. After discussion it was agreed that members would contribute produce and cakes for the stall to raise money for the institute. On May 30th. the institute will host a Whist Drive in Harmer Hill Village Hall at a charge of £3. The institute is finding it difficult to keep pace with the increase in fees of good visiting speakers, much of it inevitable due to the rise in fuel costs. The president introduced our speaker for the evening, Mrs. Pat Davies. She told us that she was a local girl born at Newton Meadows. Some residents in Harmer Hill will remember her father, Bill Davies, who served on the committee of Harmer Hill Village Hall in the days when it was undergoing its first modernisation. Mrs. Davies and her husband Roy, who accompanied her, have travelled widely since retiring and she is a keen photographer of the places they visit. Her subject on this occasion was North China and her talk proved both interesting and informative, supported by many excellent slides. They had been on a six week cultural visit to this area 14 years ago. China is the third largest country in the world with a population of 1.3 billion and 150 different |
