St. Peter's Church Needs Your Help
Challenging Times-Autumn 2011
This is a church of some considerable historic importance because of its assocation with Richard Gough, the churchwarden for many years. In 1700 he wrote his book ' Antiquities and Memoirs of the Parish of Myddle'. This work was the basis for a book, written by Professor David Hey and published by Penguin in 1981, called 'The History of Myddle'. These are seminal texts for anyone interested in social and local history. As a result of this association with Gough the church is regularly visited and it is important that the church should be preserved.
Maintaining the fabric of the church is proving difficult. In 1996 almost £18,000 was spent on the roof and in 2004 a further £82,000 had to be found to cover additional roofing costs. At present the church is undergoing major repairs to deal with attacks of both wet and dry rot to the roof timbers. The present phase of work is expected to cost £75,000 and, with help from English Heritage and Shropshire Historic Churches Trust, this can be funded.
Inspection has shown that further urgent repairs are needed to other roof timbers and to the porch. It is believed that these will cost as much again. This will prove to be a heavy burden with P.C.C. funds largely depleted and further grant aid still to be sought. The local community is working hard to raise money with events such as coffee mornings. Musical events are held several times a year which have been very successful but this is a small rural community and there is a limit to its ability to raise large sums.
